Holy Matrimony

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.

Frequently asked questions

How do we prepare for Matrimony?

The Archdiocese of Hartford requires that marriage preparation begin at least six
months prior to the celebration of the sacrament. If you have not already done so, the most important thing you can do is to begin praying and attending church together as a couple, asking God to bless and help you as you prepare for marriage. There will be several meetings with one of the priests of the parish and a program through the Archdiocese of Hartford. Recently issued (within 6 months) sacramental certificates need to be obtained from your parish of Baptism. If you are not a parishioner of St. Mary Parish you need to obtain a letter of permission from your pastor to be married at St. Mary’s.

How can I get in contact with a Priest?

The priests of St. Mary Parish can be contacted through the parish secretary (203) 562-6193 or through the ' Contact Us' Page.

Who can attend the wedding Mass?

Anyone is free to attend a Catholic wedding. However, if it is a wedding Mass where Holy Communion is to be distributed, only Catholics in good standing and who are properly prepared are able to receive Communion.

Where and when can we get married?

St. Mary Parish has two churches: 1) St. Mary Church and 2) St. Joseph Church.
Either can be booked for a wedding. Generally Saturday weddings at St. Mary’s start either at 2:00pm or 4:30pm while at St. Joseph’s they can start anytime between 1:30-3:00pm. Non-Saturday weddings are arranged on a case by case basis. Due to pastoral demands, Sunday weddings are not generally permitted in the Archdiocese of Hartford.

How do we reserve a date and time for our wedding?

Please call the parish office and ask to speak with the pastor. A $250 deposit is
required to reserve a date.

How do we arrange music for the wedding?

Dr. Muriel Maharidge is the music director at St. Mary Church. Mr. Jim DeLucia
is the music director at St. Joseph Church. You can arrange music with the director of
the church where your wedding will be held. The priest assisting you in your
preparation will give you the appropriate contact information. Payment is arranged
directly with the musician(s).

What kind of music can we have at the wedding?

Only sacred music is acceptable for Catholic weddings because the role of
music in the liturgy is to support the prayer of the community by lifting our minds and
hearts to God. Music of a secular nature and origin that is important to the couple
should be played at the reception or some other such opportunity. The music director
you work with will assist you in choosing appropriate music for the wedding.

Is parking available?

At St. Mary’s there is parking available on the street, including several spaces directly in front of the church without meters. The Yale lot at the corner of Trumbull St. and Hillhouse Ave. is also available after 4:00pm on weekdays and on weekends. St. Joseph’s has its own parking lot next to the church with ample room. Some parking is also available on the street.

Does it cost anything to use the church for the wedding?

The standard church fee for a wedding is $1200. If the bride and/or groom are registered parishioners with a history of supporting the parish financially or by volunteering their time assisting with parish activities, that fee is cut in half to $600. The parish is happy to offer active-duty military, as well as police, firefighters, and other first responders a discounted rate. Please contact the parish office.
